Team India’s world cup campaign is over in all of 6 days. Unless of course Bermuda manages to create an upset of sorts by beating Bangladesh, India’s worst fears have come true. Still a little hard to believe…I mean come on guys, we have been preparing for the World Cup since eternity now. Whatever happened to those so called experiments, good for the long run talks. If I remember correctly Guru Greg Chappell was hired to get us higher up the ladder – nice job we all must agree. We were in the 2003 World Cup final….come 2007, we could not even make it to Super Eight…good going Chappell….you have managed to ruin Indian cricket.
Bitterly disappointed I am…or rather we all are…and all we would be doing here on would be the blame game, sack the coach, fire the captain, hold protests, burn effigies, make it a parliament issue etc etc….and am sure we will see some innovations this time around of venting out the anger…the fact of the matter of course remains…Team India has managed to ruin the passion for cricket that India has…
BUT even a bigger fact which we all must learn to accept is – it’s just a game. The passion we all have for the game is great…it’s good..it’s healthy..it’s needed…but when the passion goes beyond a level that it kills a coach, incites people to destroy property of the so called failed players, the media which is supposed to be reporting news as it comes works overtime focusing on what certain group of maniacs hell bent to get their own bit of publicity did to vent out their anger on Team India..you know there is something definitely wrong with the world of cricket and it’s followers.
It’s heart breaking for me to even say this given that fact I am die hard supporter of Team India but lets face it – Team India did not deserve to be in the super eight. It’s that simple. Lets try not to make it a BIG issue and still love cricket for the game that it is and not follow it just for the patronage we have for India…

I think we need to realise the Indian cricket team is just a reflection of the state of things at the grass root level in India. Inspite of all the money in cricket, we have no cricketing/ sporting culture to speak off. As a country we don’t really encourage sports – the grounds are all being eaten up in the cities; all the grounds I grew up playing cricket in have now been converted into “parks” for the walking pleasure of the “senior citizens” and the likes.
With no real infrastructure or system, how do you expect to see world-beating sportsmen emerge? Forget about that, what’s with all the expectations from our cricket team – when did they last win *anything* and I mean *anything at all* off note – 1985? Which means I haven’t seen any triumph of note, leave alone “today’s generation”. Let’s face it, we are no better than New Zeland as a cricket team – a bunch of talented people, who rarely win anything. Of course, the Kiwis can take solace in the fact their population is less than that of Delhi and cricket isn’t even their #1 sport. What have we to hide behind?
I “got over” the cricket business around 1998-2000, thanks partly to the match-fixing business and certain other factors which are not relavant to this discussion . The sooner everyone else does the same, the better for them as individuals as well us as a society/ nation. Polticians, selectors bookies… there are too many variables in Indian cricket, for anyone to get themselves invested emotionally into this lot.
You hit the nail right on the head there Kunal…I am so done with Indian cricket now..too bad it took me this long..looks like you have been enjoying it with no strings attached and a glass of beer for a while now ehhh…well you got company now
