I think we need to realise the Indian cricket team is just a reflection of the state of things at the grass root level in India. Inspite of all the money in cricket, we have no cricketing/ sporting culture to speak off. As a country we don't really encourage sports - the grounds are all being eaten up in the cities; all the grounds I grew up playing cricket in have now been converted into "parks" for the walking pleasure of the "senior citizens" and the likes.

With no real infrastructure or system, how do you expect to see world-beating sportsmen emerge? Forget about that, what's with all the expectations from our cricket team - when did they last win *anything* and I mean *anything at all* off note - 1985? Which means I haven't seen any triumph of note, leave alone "today's generation". Let's face it, we are no better than New Zeland as a cricket team - a bunch of talented people, who rarely win anything. Of course, the Kiwis can take solace in the fact their population is less than that of Delhi and cricket isn't even their #1 sport. What have we to hide behind?

I "got over" the cricket business around 1998-2000, thanks partly to the match-fixing business and certain other factors which are not relavant to this discussion . The sooner everyone else does the same, the better for them as individuals as well us as a society/ nation. Polticians, selectors bookies... there are too many variables in Indian cricket, for anyone to get themselves invested emotionally into this lot.
